Insufficient absorption of nutrients in the digestive system, known as malabsorption, leads to various health problems. In the short term, unabsorbed nutrients cause gastrointestinal discomforts, primarily diarrhea, gas, and bloating. Diarrhea, frequently observed in malabsorption syndrome, worsens the condition by causing nutrients to pass quickly through the body, thus further reducing absorption time. In the long term, continuous nutrient deficiency leads to serious complications. Insufficient absorption of macronutrients (proteins, fats, or carbohydrates) can lead to muscle loss and a weakened immune system. A deficiency in micronutrients (vitamins and minerals) negatively affects the health of the eyes, bones, skin, and hair.
