Sleeve gastrectomy reduces the stomach's volume by reshaping it into a tube-like structure, similar to an extension of the esophagus. Beyond the reduction in stomach capacity, there is also a significant decrease in the secretion of Ghrelin, often referred to as the hunger hormone. The combined effect of a smaller stomach volume and reduced Ghrelin production leads to a decrease in appetite. Patients will experience quicker satiety and a reduced need for large food quantities. Therefore, it is crucial to provide patients with comprehensive guidance on proper nutrition both before and after the surgery. Given that patients will feel full with very small amounts of food, it is imperative that these foods are nutrient-dense, meaning rich in protein, minerals, and vitamins.
