Following knee replacement surgery, a regimen of simple exercises is crucial for strengthening the quadriceps and hamstring muscles, thereby facilitating improved walking ability and stair climbing. Beneficial exercises include pillow presses, straight leg raises, and knee bends. Consistent and regular execution of these exercises post-surgery is vital. Continuous Passive Motion (CPM) devices may also be utilized, particularly to aid knee flexion. These exercises should be diligently performed for at least 6 months to 1 year after the operation. While patients who consistently adhere to this exercise program may not require formal physical therapy, it is highly recommended for those who neglect or struggle with the prescribed regimen.
Quadriceps Exercises:
1. Sit with your back supported against the headboard of a bed, extending your leg.
2. Press the back of your knee firmly into the bed, actively contracting your quadriceps muscles (front of the thigh) as if pulling your kneecap towards your hip.
3. Hold this contraction for 5 seconds, then relax your leg.
4. Repeat this movement.
5. While lying on your back, with your knee fully straightened, lift your leg approximately 30-40 cm off the bed. Hold for 5 seconds, then slowly lower it back to the bed.
Seated Knee Flexion Exercise:
1. Sit on a chair with your feet flat on the floor.
2. Slowly slide the heel of your operated leg backward along the floor, bending your knee as far as comfortable.
3. Hold this position for 5 seconds.
4. Gently slide your heel forward to return to the starting position.
5. Repeat this movement.
