While otitis media is generally mild, in rare cases it can lead to serious complications. These complications may include: eardrum perforation, spread of infection to surrounding tissues (such as mastoid bone inflammation or mastoiditis), inflammation of the brain membrane (meningitis), abscess formation in or around the brain, and the development of chronic otitis media.
