High albumin levels do not directly cause edema. However, albumin regulates the osmotic pressure of the blood, preventing fluid from leaking from blood vessels into tissues and maintaining fluid balance. When albumin levels drop (hypoalbuminemia), this balance is disrupted; fluid leaks out of the vessels and accumulates in the tissues, leading to swelling and edema.
