The primary symptom of pleural fluid accumulation is shortness of breath, which develops due to restricted lung function. This condition can often be accompanied by pleuritic chest pain. In cases of unilateral fluid accumulation, pain may be more prominent than shortness of breath, whereas in bilateral accumulations, both shortness of breath and pain are commonly observed.
