The highest carrier frequency for the Tay-Sachs disease gene is observed among Ashkenazi Jews of Eastern and Central European descent. Approximately 1 in 25 individuals in this population carries this gene. Although Tay-Sachs is a rare disease, due to the global distribution of carriers, it has the potential for widespread global occurrence.
