Dopamine depletion can lead to a wide range of symptoms, such as cardiac rhythm irregularities, palpitations, gastrointestinal issues, depression, hypersomnia, and attention deficits. While these non-motor symptoms are significant, diagnostic challenges often emerge with Parkinson's disease, particularly given its most common initial motor symptom: bradykinesia (slowness of movement). This characteristic motor slowness in Parkinson's can be easily confused with the general physical slowing associated with natural aging or the psychomotor retardation seen in depression. Fortunately, the DAT-Scan imaging technique provides effective means to distinguish Parkinson's-related bradykinesia from other causes of motor slowness, thereby aiding in accurate diagnosis.
