Achalasia, a disorder of the digestive system, most commonly manifests between the ages of 20 and 40. While it can occur in various age groups, approximately 5% of cases are observed in children. Although the exact cause of achalasia is unknown, a reduction in ganglion (nerve) cells within the muscle layer at the lower end of the esophagus is considered a key factor. Potential contributing factors for this condition include genetic predisposition, infectious agents, toxic exposures, and autoimmune processes.
