According to Transactional Analysis, in every communication, we interact from a specific ego state (Parent, Adult, Child). This form of interaction, or 'transaction', determines how the communication will proceed. For instance, when a person asks a logical question from the Adult ego state and receives a logical response from the Adult ego state from the other party, the communication continues healthily as a 'complementary transaction'. However, if a rude or sarcastic response is given to an Adult ego state question from a different ego state, such as a Critical Parent or Rebellious Child, a 'crossed transaction' occurs, leading to a breakdown or disruption of communication. Transactional Analysis emphasizes the development of awareness (consciousness), spontaneity, and intimacy skills for individuals to achieve autonomy. Fundamental human needs such as recognition (strokes), being within a structure, and making sense of their relationships form the basis of healthy relationships. When these needs are met, relationships thrive. Particularly in emotional relationships, communication improves in quality and richness to the extent that it includes elements such as passion, affection, trust, curiosity, love, and attraction.
