Treatment for pulmonary embolism generally lasts at least 6 months. Depending on the severity of the disease, a portion of the treatment may require hospitalization. In cases of hereditary predisposition, such as Protein C deficiency, Factor V Leiden mutation, or antithrombin III deficiency, the patient may need to continue using blood thinners for life.
