Trachoma primarily affects the conjunctiva, causing severe inflammation and damage. Repeated infections lead to scarring on the inner surface of the eyelids, which can create rough areas that rub against the cornea. This scarring can also cause the eyelids to turn inward (entropion) or outward (ectropion). If left untreated, chronic irritation and subsequent corneal damage, including ulcers and the formation of pannus, can ultimately lead to irreversible blindness. Additional symptoms commonly observed include pain, eyelid swelling, itching, excessive tearing, and ocular discharge.
