Excessive levels of vitamin D, known as hypervitaminosis D, can be detrimental to health. High concentrations of vitamin D can lead to the accumulation of calcium in organs and soft tissues. This hypercalcemia can manifest as various health issues, including kidney stones, hypertension, kidney disease, and vascular problems. In severe cases, vitamin D toxicity can result in life-threatening conditions such as kidney and heart failure.
Symptoms of acute vitamin D toxicity may include bone pain, confusion, dry mouth, constipation, persistent headaches, increased thirst, muscle aches, loss of appetite, nausea, vomiting, and irregular heart rhythms. Chronic toxicity can present with symptoms such as skin itching, persistent nausea, decreased libido, severe abdominal pain, psychiatric disturbances, bone pain, cloudy urine, photophobia, and vomiting.
It's important to note that vitamin D toxicity does not occur from sun exposure, as the body effectively regulates its production from ultraviolet light.
