Cataracts primarily develop due to the denaturation of proteins within the eye's natural lens, a process commonly associated with aging. While exposure to sunlight is recognized as the most frequent causative factor, various types of cataracts can also arise from a range of other influences. These additional contributing factors include genetic predisposition, obesity, severe or chronic diarrhea, lower socioeconomic status, excessive smoking and alcohol consumption, reduced estrogen levels in post-menopausal women, and high dietary salt intake.
