Heart failure is not a disease in itself, but rather a clinical syndrome arising from various conditions where the heart cannot pump enough blood to meet the body's needs. This condition can result from numerous ailments that impair cardiac function. The causes of heart failure can be cardiac in origin or stem from extracardiac organs and systems. For instance, thyroid disorders, diabetes, hypertension, cardiac rhythm disturbances, chronic stress, and viral infections like COVID-19 can contribute to heart failure. Furthermore, certain non-cardiac conditions such as neurological and infectious diseases, along with some medications used to treat them, can also be contributing factors. Pregnancy-related heart failure (peripartum cardiomyopathy) and congenital genetic predispositions are also among the significant causes. In addition to all these known factors, there are also cases of heart failure where the cause cannot be precisely determined, referred to as idiopathic.
