Platelets, also known as thrombocytes, are small, colorless, disk-shaped blood cells originating from the cytoplasmic fragments of large cells called megakaryocytes found in the bone marrow. Their primary function is to actively contribute to the blood clotting process by adhering to damaged blood vessel walls and other platelets.
