Obesity threatens physiological health in many ways, but also negatively impacts mental health. Obesity can frequently lead to depression and other psychiatric disorders. Research suggests a linear relationship between obesity and decreased self-esteem. A desire to cope with feelings of personal inadequacy can translate into a rigid attitude towards eating behavior. In this respect, "dieting and losing weight" can function as a way to regain power and control, allowing the individual to redefine themselves, at least in terms of outward appearance.
