The diagnosis of pilonidal sinus can be easily made through a physical examination performed by a general surgeon. During this examination, tenderness in the gluteal cleft, swelling, abscess, or the presence of a sinus opening (orifice) in the coccyx area are sufficient indicators for diagnosis. In cases of severe infection, blood tests may be requested to assess the extent of the infection. Generally, imaging tests (MRI, ultrasound, etc.) are not required for the diagnosis of pilonidal cysts.
