Bone inflammation, also known as osteomyelitis, is a serious condition typically resulting from bacterial infections. Most often, bacteria such as Staphylococcus aureus (staph infection) reach the bone directly through the bloodstream or via an open wound or surgical site, causing inflammation. These bacteria establish themselves and multiply within the bone tissue, leading to severe pain, swelling, and damage to the bone. Rarely, fungi or other microorganisms can also cause this infection. The risk factors for osteomyelitis include:
* Individuals with artificial joint prostheses (e.g., hip prosthesis)
* Chronic conditions such as blood infections or sickle cell anemia
* Diabetic patients, especially those with diabetic foot ulcers
* Metal implants in the bone (e.g., screws, plates)
* Pressure ulcers (bedsores)
* A recent history of bone fracture or bone surgery
* Traumatic injuries or deep open wounds
* Individuals with a weakened immune system
