Knee replacement surgery is traditionally performed using an open surgical method. During this operation, the damaged, worn, and deteriorated joint surfaces of the knee are removed. Much like a dental crown, specially designed metal and plastic prosthetic components are placed on the ends of the thigh bone (femur) and shin bone (tibia). This prosthesis eliminates pain by preventing direct contact between the bones and ensures smooth joint movement. The kneecap (patella) is usually not removed, but its undersurface may sometimes be resurfaced. Even robot-assisted knee replacement surgeries are fundamentally performed using open surgical principles. After the operation, a typical incision scar of 7-12 cm in length remains on the knee area.
