The retina contains three types of photoreceptor cells, called cone cells, which enable our eyes to perceive primary colors such as red, green, and blue. Types of color blindness are therefore classified according to deficiencies in the perception of these primary colors. For example, deuteranomaly refers to a green color perception defect, protanopia to a red color perception defect, and tritanopia to a blue color perception defect.
