Toxoplasmosis is caused by a parasite called *Toxoplasma gondii*. This parasite is commonly found in the intestines of cats and is shed in their feces. Toxoplasmosis is more common in people who have close contact with cat feces or cats. However, it can also be transmitted to humans through contaminated food or water. Cats that hunt or eat raw meat are more likely to be infected and transmit the parasite. It can also be present on the surface of fruits and vegetables.
