An omphalocele is easily recognizable by its appearance. Instead of skin, the baby's abdomen has a sac containing abdominal organs. In babies born with an omphalocele, the abdominal wall has developed normally, but the abdominal cavity is smaller than usual. The umbilical cord runs within the sac and is located at the apex of the sac that protrudes from the abdomen. The sac is translucent, allowing the organs inside to be visible. The sac usually contains part or all of the intestines, but may also include the stomach, liver, spleen, even the pancreas and bladder.
