One of the conditions frequently confused with diaphragm paralysis is diaphragmatic eventration. This condition arises due to the upward displacement and stretching of the diaphragm caused by factors that increase intra-abdominal pressure, such as obesity, pregnancy, or intra-abdominal tumors. In diaphragmatic eventration, although the diaphragm's neural innervation is normal, its mechanical function becomes insufficient due to excessive stretching, which can lead to shortness of breath.
Another condition that can be confused with diaphragm paralysis is a diaphragmatic hernia. An opening in the diaphragm, which occurs for various reasons, leads to the displacement of intra-abdominal organs into the chest cavity. This displacement occurs due to the negative pressure in the chest cavity and the positive pressure difference in the abdominal cavity. Consequently, the patient may develop shortness of breath, and this condition can clinically resemble diaphragm paralysis.
