Thyroid nodules are fluid-filled (cystic) or solid masses formed by the abnormal proliferation of normal cells within the butterfly-shaped thyroid gland, located in the front of the neck. Approximately 5% of thyroid nodules, which are quite common in the general population, may carry a risk of thyroid cancer, and this type of cancer is observed four times more frequently in women than in men.
