The spinal cord is located within the vertebral bones, extending from the skull down to the tailbone in the lumbar region. Benign or malignant tumors can develop in the spinal cord itself or in the membranes surrounding it. Medulla oblongata tumors, which develop in the brainstem, should be considered a separate category from spinal and spinal cord tumors. A large proportion of tumors found in the spine are metastatic tumors that have spread from other organs. Among the cancers that most frequently metastasize to the spine are breast cancer, lung cancer, and prostate cancer.
