A decrease in the red blood cell (erythrocyte) count can be observed due to various reasons. These causes include anemias resulting from nutritional deficiencies such as iron, vitamin B12, and folate deficiency. Bone marrow disorders like hypoplasia, aplasia, and pancytopenia are also important factors. Furthermore, blood loss due to various reasons (such as gastrointestinal bleeding, trauma, severe burns), medical treatments like radiotherapy and chemotherapy, side effects of certain medications, and chronic diseases such as cancer and HIV/AIDS can also lead to a decrease in red blood cells.
