The ALT (Alanine Aminotransferase) test is performed using a blood sample drawn from a vein in the arm. This enzyme plays a key role in the liver's conversion of nutrients into energy. Normally, ALT is found inside liver cells and is detected only at very low levels in the bloodstream, originating from dead liver cells. Elevated ALT levels in the blood, above the normal range, are a significant indicator of liver damage. This test is conducted to assess liver function, detect potential liver damage, and determine appropriate treatment approaches. No special preparation is typically required for the test.
