During a thyroid fine needle aspiration biopsy (FNAB), the patient is generally not put to sleep. The procedure is performed by numbing the biopsy area with local anesthesia. This allows the patient to remain awake while pain sensation is minimized. However, more invasive procedures, such as an open thyroid biopsy, may require general anesthesia.
