Prosopagnosia, commonly known as face blindness, can stem from various causes. Studies indicate it may be a hereditary condition. Additionally, it can be acquired due to factors such as stroke, brain injury, or certain neurodegenerative diseases. Some individuals are born with congenital prosopagnosia, which often suggests a genetic link and may run in families. While an association with autism spectrum disorder has been observed, prosopagnosia is not a standard symptom of autism. It is important to note that face blindness is distinct from general vision impairment, learning difficulties, or memory loss. Rather than a problem with recalling individuals, it is a specific difficulty in recognizing faces.
