The exact cause of Patent Foramen Ovale (PFO) is not yet fully understood. During the fetal period, there is a flap-like structure called the foramen ovale between the right and left upper chambers (atria) of the heart, which normally closes spontaneously during infancy after birth. However, in some cases, this opening may remain open for unknown reasons.
