The spinal column is composed of a total of 33 vertebrae, 24 of which are mobile. The joints located between two adjacent vertebrae are called facet joints. Each vertebra features a pair of facet joints at its posterior aspect. Facet joints connect the vertebrae, providing structural support to the spine and enabling movement in various directions. The morphology of the facet joints also dictates the specific range of motion for the spinal column. For instance, the facet joints in the lumbar spine restrict excessive forward bending, rotation, and slippage of the vertebrae over one another.
