The diagnosis of Retinitis Pigmentosa is confirmed after the onset of symptoms through Electroretinography (ERG) and visual field tests. The ERG test measures the electrical activity of the retina via electrodes placed around the eye. Different types of ERG are used to evaluate various visual functions and are generally associated with a very mild discomfort. Visual field tests determine the scope of the patient's vision, revealing the degree of visual impairment or loss. In advanced stages, diagnosis can also be made through direct ophthalmological examination. For individuals with a family history of Retinitis Pigmentosa, these early-stage tests can detect the disease, identify carriers, and this information can contribute to preventing potential risk factors such as consanguineous marriages within the scope of genetic counseling.
