Capsule endoscopy presents several disadvantages. Unlike traditional endoscopic procedures, it does not offer real-time visualization or physician control, which means specific areas cannot be re-examined, viewed from different angles, or cleared of obscuring secretions for better assessment. Furthermore, it is unable to perform biopsies, which are crucial for the definitive diagnosis of detected lesions such as polyps, ulcers, bleeding sites, or masses. Capsule endoscopy also lacks therapeutic capabilities; for example, it can identify bleeding but cannot intervene to stop it. Lastly, the procedure is often expensive and may not be covered by many insurance providers.
