Acute otitis media (middle ear infection) is most commonly caused by bacterial pathogens. Among these, *Streptococcus pneumoniae* and *Haemophilus influenzae* (particularly non-typeable strains) are the predominant culprits. Additionally, viral infections, such as those responsible for the common cold, can also contribute to the development of middle ear inflammation.
