The exact cause of otosclerosis (inner ear calcification) is not yet fully understood. However, various factors are thought to play a role in the development of the condition. The incidence of the disease is higher in individuals with a family history of otosclerosis, suggesting that genetic predisposition may be an important factor. It has been observed that otosclerosis can emerge or progress during pregnancy; hormonal changes during gestation are thought to be influential in this process. Furthermore, it is known that the risk of otosclerosis is higher in individuals who have had measles infection.
