Somatostatin analogs are synthetic derivatives of the somatostatin hormone. These drugs are effective in somatostatin receptor-positive neuroendocrine tumors by suppressing tumor growth and controlling symptoms caused by excessive hormone secretion from tumors. They particularly have the potential to slow down or halt tumor progression in metastatic neuroendocrine cancers. In the treatment of carcinoid tumors, somatostatin analogs can help extend patient lifespan by slowing down or stopping disease progression. They are also effective in treating symptoms of carcinoid syndrome such as wheezing, flushing, and nausea. Somatostatin analogs like Octreotide can also be used during or after carcinoid tumor surgery to prevent and manage complications related to serotonin or other hormones secreted by the tumor.
