While the exact cause of Paget's disease is not fully known, a number of risk factors have been observed to play a role in its development. Genetic predisposition is a significant factor; this is supported by a higher incidence in populations of White European origin, particularly in regions like England, Scotland, and Central Europe. A family history is present in 10% to 30% of patients, and it is more common in men than in women. Some studies suggest that viral infections, such as those caused by Paramyxovirus, might play a role in the disease's development, although definitive scientific evidence is not yet available. Furthermore, age is an important risk factor; the disease is typically diagnosed after the age of 50.
