A blood gas test, often referred to as a blood gas analysis or arterial blood gas (ABG) test, is a crucial diagnostic procedure performed to measure the levels of oxygen and carbon dioxide, pH value, and acid-base balance in the blood. The lungs are vital organs responsible for facilitating the transfer of oxygen into the blood and the removal of carbon dioxide from it. This test evaluates how effectively the lungs are able to transfer oxygen into the bloodstream and eliminate carbon dioxide from the blood. The results of a blood gas test play a critical role in the diagnosis and monitoring of various health issues. These issues may include conditions such as diabetic ketoacidosis, kidney failure, heart failure, severe infections, internal bleeding, and chemical poisoning. A specialist doctor may request a blood gas test if symptoms of the aforementioned health problems are observed. The test is typically performed by taking a small blood sample from an artery (most commonly in the wrist), which is then analyzed in a laboratory.
