Capsule endoscopy is an advanced imaging technique primarily designed for the investigation of small bowel diseases. While upper endoscopy allows visualization of the esophagus, stomach, and the initial segment of the small intestine (the duodenum), and colonoscopy provides examination of the large intestine and the terminal ileum (the final section of the small intestine), a significant portion of the small intestine, approximately 6 meters in length, remains inaccessible to these conventional methods. To address this diagnostic gap, capsule endoscopy and enteroscopy techniques have been developed to thoroughly examine this otherwise unreachable middle segment of the small bowel.
