Cochlear implants are medical devices that significantly improve hearing in individuals experiencing severe to profound hearing loss who do not benefit sufficiently from hearing aids. These implants have the potential to enhance users' communication skills and, consequently, their overall quality of life. Cochlear implants can be applied to a single ear (unilateral) or both ears (bilateral). In adults, a combination of one cochlear implant and a hearing aid in the other ear is usually preferred initially; over time, if hearing loss progresses, a transition to a second implant may occur. Especially for infants and children in the crucial period of language development, bilateral implantation is generally recommended for those with bilateral severe to profound hearing loss, often simultaneously. Most users of cochlear implants express satisfaction with the device.
