The transmission of the swine flu (H1N1) virus is similar to that of seasonal flu. It can spread through direct contact with respiratory droplets expelled into the air when infected individuals cough or sneeze, or indirectly by touching surfaces contaminated with these droplets (such as doorknobs or faucets) and then touching the mouth, nose, or eyes. It is important to note that H1N1 swine flu is not transmitted through the consumption of pork. Individuals carrying the virus can continue to spread it from about one day before symptoms begin and for approximately seven days thereafter.
