The endoscopic gastric balloon plays an important role in obesity treatment. According to World Health Organization (WHO) criteria, individuals with a Body Mass Index (BMI) above 30 are considered obese. This treatment is primarily applied to two patient groups: 1. Direct Application: Obesity patients with a BMI above 35. 2. Application in Cases of Co-existing Diseases: Patients with a BMI above 30 who have obesity-related co-existing diseases such as diabetes, sleep apnea, or high blood pressure. Another critical use of the gastric balloon is as a bridge therapy. It is used in morbidly obese patients for whom bariatric surgery is planned, but whose surgical risks (e.g., due to cardiac or pulmonary functions) are very high. By placing the balloon, the patient falls below a certain weight threshold, which improves general condition and organ functions. This reduces anesthesia and surgical risks, allowing the patient to be prepared for surgery more safely. Once sufficient weight loss and health improvement are achieved, the balloon is removed, and the planned surgical operation is performed.
