Medications used in the treatment of middle ear infection are prescribed primarily to alleviate pain and control the infection. For pain management, over-the-counter pain relievers such as acetaminophen or ibuprofen may be used. In cases where there is no perforation or tear in the eardrum, local anesthetic ear drops can help relieve pain. For the treatment of infection, antibiotics administered orally or as ear drops are essential. Specially compounded drops prepared in pharmacies may also be included in the treatment. The benefit of decongestants for nasal congestion and antihistamines for allergies in the treatment of middle ear infection is not scientifically proven and generally not recommended.
