When patients present with shortness of breath, a physical examination may reveal diminished or absent breath sounds, raising suspicion of fluid accumulation in the lungs. A specialist physician will then typically request a chest X-ray. On the X-ray, signs of fluid accumulation, such as pleural effusion or pulmonary opacification, are often evident. If further confirmation or more detailed assessment is required, a definitive diagnosis can be established with a CT scan.
