"Plasma energy," created by the use of high levels of radiofrequency energy, is the phenomenon of ionizing water vapor on the tissue and in the air to create an ion cloud, or plasma ball. The necessary sodium (Na) ions for the environment are provided from an isotonic solution, or saline. The sodium ions in the saline provide the plasma region with the necessary sodium while also keeping the surgical site clean. Tissue entering this ion cloud, or plasma ball, vaporizes and can be removed. In this way, adenoid tissue is vaporized and completely removed within a few minutes, without bleeding. While the vaporized tissue is removed by vacuum, any potential bleeding from blood vessels is simultaneously stopped. The same procedure can be applied to tonsils. While curettage is performed blindly, as the surgical site is not within the field of vision, the plasma method allows the entire surgical site to be viewed with an operating microscope at 10x magnification. Because the adenoids are removed under direct vision, the chance of recurrence is lower.
