Dysentery may resolve spontaneously within 3-7 days. In treatment, fluid replacement is crucial. Oral rehydration is preferred. In cases of severe fluid loss, particularly if the patient cannot adequately consume fluids and food due to nausea and vomiting, initial intravenous fluid administration may be necessary.
Treatment of severe dysentery includes fluid therapy alongside treatment targeting the causative microbial agent. In amoebic dysentery, amoebae are killed using medications such as metronidazole. In bacillary dysentery, antibiotics effective against Shigella bacteria are used. Anti-diarrheal medications are not used in dysentery treatment. Recovery without antibiotics is possible, and your doctor will determine the necessity of antibiotics.
