A PCT test is requested with suspicion of systemic or serious bacterial infection and sepsis. If the patient shows signs of sepsis, a PCT should be performed. Signs of sepsis may include clammy skin, shivering, fever, pain, rapid breathing, palpitations, confusion, and reduced urination. This test may be requested in cases of pneumonia, meningitis, and urinary tract infections. It is sometimes also performed to monitor the effectiveness of antibiotic treatment.
