In some individuals who develop severe acute pancreatitis, a portion of the pancreatic tissue dies, undergoing necrosis (necrotizing pancreatitis). In this case, the pancreas may become infected, leading to organ failure. Surgical removal of the dead tissue and antibiotic treatment are undertaken. This is a serious complication and can be life-threatening.
