The recovery process after shoulder dislocation surgery varies depending on the surgical method applied and the individual's condition, but general guidance can be provided. Following the surgery, a gentle exercise program with a limited range of motion is typically initiated. For the first 2-3 weeks, patients are advised to perform non-strenuous movements in daily life and to keep their arm protected in a shoulder sling.
During the first month, patients may require assistance with daily activities such as household chores, shopping, and driving. Automobile driving should only be resumed when the patient can comfortably and safely perform the necessary functions. This period may be extended, especially if the surgery was performed on the right shoulder due to the need for gear shifting.
With the approval of an Orthopedics and Traumatology specialist, patients may return to sports approximately 6 weeks after surgery, provided they do not overexert themselves. To prevent shoulder stiffness, the specialist will check shoulder mobility 2-3 weeks post-surgery. The recovery process, guided by a physiotherapist, typically lasts 4-6 weeks. Most patients are able to comfortably use their shoulders for normal daily activities a few months after surgery.
However, contact sports or strenuous movements that could increase the risk of re-dislocation of the shoulder are generally advised to be avoided for 4-6 months after the surgery.
